Exploring the polyvagal theory
March 22 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

In this workshop, we will be exploring the polyvagal theory within our body work practices, whether you are a physiotherapist, massage therapist, osteopath or even a movement (Pilates, Yoga) teacher.
This is the first part of a three-part series of workshops in 2025 examining how we can help clients find rhythm and regulation in their nervous system. Each workshop can be attended individually, but also form a comprehensive overview if all three are attended.
The workshop will discuss Stephen W Porges’ work on the polyvagal theory, using his research as a foundation and selecting the areas that apply to us as therapists. This one-day workshop is an exploration into the pieces of Steven’s work that have become meaningful for me within my practise.
Whilst treating with people in long term pain, my experience is that patients presenting with low-burn anxiety or low-burn stress are fatigued by the condition, and the central vagal nerve loses its ability to regulate the nervous system.
My view is that within polyvagal theory and the dysregulation of the nervous system, there is no one way there is no steady fix. It requires therapists who are curious to try a different approach, whether it is soft tissue work, or language to reframe or movements, to bring about change.
Aims of the day
- To explore the language we use, finding words and techniques that are accessible to the people we treat, and achievable.
- To investigate ways for clients to access relaxation, pausing or mindfulness. I have found that the language we use is key, along with breath work.
- Using Hendrickson Method soft tissue mobilisations to calm the autonomic nervous system.
- Explore ways that we can help these people find rhythm and regulation, in ways that are unique to the individual.
In conclusion the day will be a mix of Steven’s findings around language, reframing, life actions and events, alongside exploring how we can work hands on, especially within the Hendrickson method, to calm down the vagal nerve, bringing regulation and rhythm back.
Tea, coffee and lunch are provided.
